Originating from South Korea and popularized by TikTok, the dalgona coffee is made from a simple combination of instant coffee, sugar, hot water and milk. It’s named after a Korean honeycomb candy called “dalgona” which has a similar caramel color and creamy texture. Let’s dive into all the perks and preparations!
What You’ll Need
Instant coffee: I usually opt for Nescafe instant coffee, but any instant coffee brand works well for this recipe. It’s essential to use instant coffee as ground coffee doesn’t dissolve well in water, which is crucial for achieving the desired frothy texture in Dalgona coffee.
Milk: serves as the creamy foundation for the beverage. This versatile drink can be made using various milk options such as whole milk, skimmed milk, or plant-based alternatives, allowing for customization based on individual preferences and dietary needs.
Sugar: this balances the bitterness of the coffee.
Feel free to experiment with a variety of sweeteners like honey, agave syrup, date syrup, or even stevia to customize the sweetness of your Dalgona coffee according to your taste preferences. Each sweetener brings its own distinct flavor profile to the drink.
Hot water: helps dissolve the coffee and sugars. It is essential to create the concentrated base needed for whipping.
Tools and tips
I prefer using a hand mixer because it’s convenient and super easy to cleanup but you can also use a whisk, frother or even a stand mixer.- When using a whisk, ensure to use a zigzag pattern rather than a circular motion as it incorporates more air into the mixture making it whip faster.
- If you have a sweet tooth, feel free to sweeten your Dalgona coffee by adding more sweetener to the milk. Adding extra sweetener to the coffee itself can make it dense and challenging to whip into that fluffy texture we all enjoy.

- Using a your preferred mixing method, whisk the mixture until it becomes thick and fluffy. This usually takes about 2-5 minutes. You can also use a frother or stand mixer on high speed or a whisk, but this will require more elbow grease!
